The Drive to Kavala

You head east on the Egnatia Odos, which is a proper modern highway. After about an hour you cross the Strymon river — nice flat delta country. Then the road curves south and suddenly you see Kavala built on a hillside dropping into the Aegean. It's one of those arrivals where the destination looks great before you even get there.

The whole trip is 150 km and usually takes about an hour and forty-five minutes. Traffic is rarely a problem on this route — it's highway almost the entire way.

What's in Kavala

Kavala doesn't get the tourist crowds that Halkidiki does, which is part of why it's worth visiting. The old town sits on a peninsula with a Byzantine castle on top — you can walk up there for free and the view over the harbor is fantastic. Down below, the Kamares aqueduct (16th century, still standing, pretty impressive) cuts through the modern city. There's a tobacco museum that sounds boring but is actually interesting — Kavala was one of the biggest tobacco trading hubs in the eastern Mediterranean. And the old port area has good fish tavernas where locals actually eat.

Catching a Ferry

A lot of our Kavala passengers are actually heading to Thassos island. Quick geography note: the main Thassos ferry leaves from Keramoti, not Kavala, and that's a separate route (we do that too — see our Keramoti-Thassos page). But there are some ferries from Kavala port itself, mostly in summer. They take about 75 minutes instead of 35 from Keramoti. If you're catching a ferry from Kavala port, let us know which one and we'll time the drop-off so you have at least 30 minutes before boarding.

Where We Can Take You

Most people go to the city center — that's where the hotels, the old town, and the port all are, everything within walking distance. We can also take you to nearby beaches like Nea Karvali or Nea Peramos if your accommodation is out that way. Just put the address in the booking form and we'll sort it out.

The Vehicles

For a couple or solo traveler, we send a Mercedes E-Class sedan — plenty of room for 2-3 suitcases and a smooth ride for the 2-hour trip. Families of 4-8 get a V-Class van with more luggage space and legroom. Bigger groups up to 14 ride in a Sprinter minibus. All have AC, which matters in summer on this route.

Questions People Ask

How long is the ride from SKG Airport?

Around 1 hour 45 minutes in normal conditions. It's 150 km, almost all highway. We've never had it take more than 2 hours unless there's roadwork.

What if I want to go TO the airport from Kavala?

Same price, same service. We pick you up at your hotel and drive you to SKG. Just book it the same way — we usually suggest leaving about 3 hours before your flight to be safe.

My flight might land late — what then?

We track your flight from the moment you book. If it's delayed 20 minutes or 3 hours, the driver adjusts. You don't have to call or worry about it. No extra charge.

Can you drop me at Kavala port?

Absolutely — same price as the city center since the port is right there. Tell us your ferry time and we'll build in enough buffer.
